ABOUT PIANO LESSONS
    Business & Lesson Format:
  • First time students: Initially, there is a complimentary music lesson/interview to assess whether or not the student is ready for lessons. During this session basic music readiness skills are evaluated and reading skills are also evaluated.
  • Transfer students require an audition/interview.
  • All piano lessons are ½ hour in duration, one-on-one, private tutoring, given weekly. If desired, 1 hour lessons and/or 45 minute lessons are available, too. No group lessons are offered at this time.
  • One piano lesson monthly will consist of theory, ear-training and sight-reading. 10 minutes each element for the ½ hour lesson. The written test will be given to the student to complete 2 weeks in advance of this session. Every month each student will receive a new test to take at level. This process prepares all students for Certificate of Merit but develops musicianship.
  • Computer Lab is another ½ hour (optional but recommended). Computer time is self-paced, independent study. It features ear-training, note recognition, theory and games.
  • New students have a 2 month evaluative period to remain in the studio.
  • Tuition rate is discussed in person.
  • Administrative/Registration Fee. New. This fee covers recital auditorium rental fee, program printing costs, and monthly copying of theory tests. This fee is in the amount of $30.00 for each student.
  • No contract. You can discontinue anytime with a 1 month notice. To gain a true overview of piano, a 1 year commitment is recommended.
  • In addition to using well known and pedagogical sound teaching materials, a variety of literature from the historical eras of music (Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Impressionistic/Early 20th Century, and Contemporary), as well as popular tunes, and hymn arrangements are used to foster musical literacy, education, and appreciation.
  • All students are expected to participate in recitals. (See Events Calendar).
    Musicianship:
  • A thorough study of music includes lessons, theory, technique, sight-reading, transposition, improvisation, ear-training, and performance. Selected elements will be studied systematically in conjunction with curriculum guidelines as set forth in the Music Teachers' Association of California Syllabus. Annual testing for these components is also available through the 'Certificate of Merit" ™ administered by the MTAC at additional cost for those students who wish to participate. (See Accelerated Musicianship).
    Accelerated Musicianship:
  • For students of all levels who are highly motivated, accelerated musicianship opportunities abound:
    • "Certificate of Merit" ™ as administered by the Music Teachers' of California (MTAC) emphasizing memorized piano performance with adjudication, a written theory test, technique, sight-reading, ear-training. Fee based programs. (See www.mtac.org).
    • "National Guild" as administered by the National Guild of Piano Teachers (NGPT) emphasizing memorized piano performance with adjudication. Fee based programs.
    Enrollment Options:
  • Private Lessons
  • South Sutter Charter School, Home-School vendor
  • San Juan Unified School District, Visions, Home-School vendor
    Tuition:
  • Email statements are sent approximately 2 weeks before the commencement of the next month.
  • Payment is due in advance of the first lesson of each month.
  • A $10.00 late fee is applicable after the 10th of each month.
  • Regardless of the number of lessons taken each month, the tuition is fixed.
  • If auto bill pay is used, please make sure your payment is sent prior to the 10th.
  • If payment arrangements are needed, please speak with me
  • Checks are payable to "Bill Becker Music Studio".
    Materials:
  • Materials are not included in tuition. With student/parent permission and as a convenience, this studio will provide teaching materials and include these charges on the monthly statements. All music sold will include the current sales tax for Sacramento County. Occasionally, you may be asked to get materials at the local music store.
    Absences:
  • Make-ups are only as time allows, not guaranteed. For any absence, please call immediately so your lesson time can be offered to other families.
    Practice:
  • Not only is the study of piano academic, but it is "applied." Maintaining a consistent daily "hands-on" practice time with your instrument is optimum. Format will be discussed. Typically, daily practice will at least equal, and preferably double the lesson time. (Also, see Commitment to Musical Excellence).
    Commitment to Musical Excellence/Practice:
  • Not only is the study of piano academic, but it is "applied." Maintaining a consistent daily "hands-on" practice time with your instrument is optimum. Format will be discussed. Typically, daily practice will at least equal, and preferably double the lesson time.
  • I reserve the right to dismiss any student who consistently does not practice, neglects to bring all books faithfully each week, and/or is frequently absent.
  • Therefore, I will teach my heart out-for-you, but "ya-gotta-wanna" be willing to listen, learn, and apply your new knowledge! Studying piano is about learning a new skill, practicing faithfully and having fun! It is important to recognize that practicing is you your benefit so you will grow musically - not just to please me!
